English Language intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) Visa
This visa allows the holder to stay in Australia to study a full-time English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS). This includes:
- courses that lead to a certificate I, II, III or IV
- courses that result in no formal Australian award.
Please note: If the holder is studying ELICOS as a pre-requisite to another course, they must apply for the visa appropriate to their main course of study. If several courses are being studied, the main course is the higher level course.
Criteria to apply
- The holder must be enrolled as a student in a registered English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS) to be eligible to apply for this visa.
- The holder’s individual circumstances must demonstrate that they genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily.
- The holder must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for themselves, their partner and their dependant children for the duration of their stay in Australia. They must also have enough money to support their partner and dependent children, even if they do not travel with the visa holder to Australia.
- The visa holder must meet certain health requirements. These requirements will depend on the visa holder’s personal circumstances, including, period of stay, country of citizenship, time spent in another country during the last five years and intended activities in Australia
- The visa holder must be of good character to enter Australia
This visa will allow the holder to:
study in Australia
eligible dependant family members can accompany the holder to Australia
work up to 40 hours per fortnight while your course is in session and unlimited hours during scheduled course breaks.
family members can work up to 40 hours per fortnight provided the visa holder has commenced their course of study in Australia.
Schools Visa
This visa allows international students to stay and to study in Australia and attend and complete:
- a primary school course
- a secondary school course, including junior and senior secondary or
- an approved secondary school exchange program.

- The visa holder must be accepted for full-time study in a registered course or part of a registered course
- The visa holder’s individual circumstances must demonstrate that they genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily
- The holder must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for themselves, their partner and their dependent children for the duration of their stay in Australia. They must also have enough money to support their partner and dependent children, even if they do not travel with the visa holder to Australia
- The visa holder must meet certain health requirements. These requirements will depend on the visa holder’s personal circumstances, including, period of stay, country of citizenship, time spent in another country during the last five years and intended activities in Australia
- The visa holder must be of good character to enter Australia
- Students under 18 years of age have specific visa requirements.
Vocational Education Visa
This visa allows international students to stay and study in Australia and whose main course of study is:
- a certificate I, II, III and IV (except ELICOS)
- a VET diploma
- a VET advanced diploma
- a vocational graduate certificate, or
- a vocational graduate diploma.

- The visa holder must be accepted for full-time study in a registered course or part of a registered course
- The visa holder’s individual circumstances must demonstrate that they genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily
- The holder must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for themselves, their partner and their dependent children for the duration of their stay in Australia. They must also have enough money to support their partner and dependent children, even if they do not travel with the visa holder to Australia
- The visa holder must meet certain health requirements. These requirements will depend on the visa holder’s personal circumstances, including, period of stay, country of citizenship, time spent in another country during the last five years and intended activities in Australia

Higher Education Visa
This visa allows international students to stay and study in Australia and whose main course of study is one of the following:
- Bachelor degree
- associate degree
- graduate certificate
- graduate diploma
- Masters by coursework
- Higher Education diploma
- Higher Education advanced diploma.

- The visa holder must be accepted for full-time study in a registered course or part of a registered course
- The visa holder’s individual circumstances must demonstrate that they genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily
- The holder must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for themselves, their partner and their dependent children for the duration of their stay in Australia. They must also have enough money to support their partner and dependent children, even if they do not travel with the visa holder to Australia

Post Graduate Research Visa
This visa allows international students to stay and study a Masters degree by research or a Doctoral degree in Australia

- The visa holder’s individual circumstances must demonstrate that they genuinely intend to stay in Australia temporarily
- The holder must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for themselves, their partner and their dependent children for the duration of their stay in Australia. They must also have enough money to support their partner and dependent children, even if they do not travel with the visa holder to Australia

Non Award Sector Visa
This visa is allows international students to stay and study the following courses in Australia:
- a non-award foundation studies course
- other full-time course (or components of a course) that does not lead to an Australian award.
Please note: If you are studying a non-award course as a pre-requisite to another course, you must apply for the visa appropriate for your main course of study. If you are studying several courses, the main course is the higher level course.

Foreign Affairs or Defence Sector Visa
This visa allows international students who are sponsored by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade or the Department of Defence to stay and study a full-time course of any type in Australia.

Student Guardian Visa
The Student Guardian visa (subclass 580) is a temporary visa for a person who needs to come to Australia to provide care and support for:
- a student visa holder who is younger than 18 years of age
- a student visa holder who is older than 18 years of age and who needs such care and support due to exceptional circumstances.
Please note: There can only be one Student Guardian visa holder at any given time in respect of a particular student visa holder (except in certain limited circumstances).
Criteria to apply:
- are a parent or person who has legal custody of the nominating student visa holder, or a relative of the student visa holder who is nominated by the student’s parent or guardian
- are at least 21 years of age
- are able to provide accommodation, general welfare and other support to the student visa holder
- are a genuine temporary entrant
- meet financial requirements
- meet health, character and other requirements
