Australia and the United Kingdom share close cultural ties as Australia was once a former British prison colony. The true relationship between Australia and England officially started in 1901 when six British territories federated to form the Commonwealth of Australia, a dominion in the British Empire. Since that time, the Australians have supported England in both WWI and WWII, and even today the United Kingdom is the second largest foreign investor in Australia, just as Australia is the seventh largest foreign investor in the United Kingdom.

In recent years there has been growing support for the idea of freedom of movement between the UK and Australia with citizens able to live and work in these countries. Currently, certain eligibility criteria is somewhat easier to meet for citizens of the UK travelling to Australia to live, work, study or jut visit.
