The Skilled Independent visa is a permanent residence visa which allows points-tested skilled workers who are not sponsored by an employer or family member or nominated by a state or territory government to live and work in Australia on a permanent basis.

Before applying for this visa an Expression of Interest must be lodged through SkillSelect, and subsequently, an invitation through SkillSelect to apply for the visa must be received.

This visa involves a two-step process:

  • 1 - Submission of Expression of Interest through SkillSelect
  • 2 - Lodgement of visa application within specified time

Upon receiving an invitation through SkillSelect, the applicant must have:

Criteria to apply:

  • Nominated an occupation that is on the relevant skilled occupation list
  • Obtained a suitable skills assessment for that occupation
  • Not yet turned 50 years of age
  • Achieved the score specified in the letter of invitation based on the factors in the points test
  • Have the required skills and qualifications for the position
  • Appropriate English language skills (at the time of application lodgement), unless exempt
  • Meet health and character requirements
