This temporary residence visa allows a skilled worker travel to Australia and work in their nominated occupation for their approved sponsor (employer) for up to four years.

In order to be granted a subclass 457 visa, there are 3 steps that must be followed:

This visa involves a three-step process:

  • 1 - The sponsoring company must apply for approval as a Standard Business Sponsor
  • 2- The sponsoring company must apply for approval of a nominated position within their company in which a 457 visa holder is intending to fill
  • 3 - The prospective employee that wishes to fill the nominated position (listed in point 2) applies for a subclass 457 visa

Criteria to apply:

  • A nominated position can only be approved if it is listed as a specified skilled occupation (determined by the Australian Government)
  • The nominated position must be paid “market rate” (this is the same rate of pay that Australians working in the same positions are paid). Some exceptions apply where there are no Australians working in similar positions
  • The nominated position must be a genuine position.
  • The visa holder must meet the skill requirements for the nominated occupation
  • The visa holder must meet registration and licensing obligations
  • The visa holder must meet the English language requirement
  • The visa holder must meet all their own health costs whilst in Australia
  • The holder must have enough money to pay for travel, tuition and living expenses for themselves, their partner and their dependent children for the duration of their stay in Australia. They must also have enough money to support their partner and dependent children, even if they do not travel with the visa holder to Australia.
  • The visa holder must be of good character to enter Australia
